A Motherlode of Breastfeeding Information
The first few weeks of breastfeeding are the most challenging. Once your baby has settled into your family and a nursing routine, it becomes second nature to nurse your baby. There will be a few changes that you will notice as the weeks wear on. The heavy, full breasts of the first few weeks start to soften and become lighter. This is your body becoming accustomed to the process of lactation. This is NOT an indicator that your milk supply is decreasing.
Your baby may also start to shorten the duration of each nursing session. As your baby becomes a more efficient nurser she can drain your breast quicker. The early weeks of almost constant nursing start to space out into a more predictable pattern. You might notice your baby nursing less often each day. This is common as babies grow older. Some babies continue to nurse very frequently. Each baby is different, and there is no one perfect number for nursing frequency.
As you get to know your baby, you will start to be able to predict his hunger times. Nursing before your baby gets upset and is crying helps to keep the peace in the household. Holding your baby and nursing frequently cannot spoil your baby. Please, don't let anyone tell you this. Meeting your baby's needs is the job of a parent. As babies. their needs and wants are the same thing. Meeting a baby's needs consistently and quickly help the baby to feel safe and loved. A baby that has her needs met in the early years grows into a child who is healthy, secure and more independent.
